Reflection
I have selected my Small Scale Literature Review as the artifact to demonstrate how I explain key ideas and principles related to Instructional Design. I have selected this artifact because my literature review discusses the latest research on how to design and implement Flipped Classrooms in K-12 STEM education incorporating POE and SRL strategies using technology, thereby improving student engagement, motivation, and performance.
This competence is important because it is necessary in Instructional Design to be able to clearly articulate ID concepts and principles to stakeholders. Examples of how this artifact demonstrates this competency include the following: the research paper discusses challenges of existing flipped classrooms, how self-regulated learning in FC improves Math performance and academic achievement, and how technology-enhanced POE strategies improve SRL and science processing skills. This in-turn suggests ways to design instructions to improve students’ motivation, engagement and learning in science research skills while using flipped classrooms.
My previous knowledge about how flipped classrooms operate, how students engage in content beforehand so more collaborative activities can be done in the classroom, helped me understand challenges and further research related to SRL and POE. This helped me understand how flipped classrooms can be better designed by incorporating instructional design principles, to overcome students related challenges and improve academic performance.
My Small Scale Literature Review worked as an appropriate artifact for the ‘Applying ID Research and Theory’ challenge because I was able to demonstrate research skills in a topic related to instructional design principles. Some important things I learned while earning this challenge include conducting research by referring to multiple published apers, distilling information across ID concepts and presenting information in a coherent manner. In the future, I will use these research skills better understand and apply various principles and concepts related to Instructional Design.
