TILT or Transparency in Learning and Teaching is a scientifically researched framework that is proven to promote college students' success. The framework advises the 3 aspects of Purpose, Task and Criteria to be incorporated into all assignments, coursework & assessments and explicitly communicated to students at the outset. This approach vastly improves student success, especially for first-generation, low income and underrepresented college students.
This approach aims to promote an inclusive learning environment, offer equitable learning opportunities for underserved students and improve learner persistence and retention rates.
In the Digital Multimeter Activity / Lab, I incorporated the TILT Framework by explicitly stating information under the 3 categories of Purpose, Task and Criteria, on the first page of the activity on Canvas. I found the TILT checklist very useful to ensure that I incorporate the most important aspects of the framework into the lesson plan.
Under Purpose, I clearly defined the learning objectives using Bloom's taxonomy, and precisely stated what knowledge and skills learners will gain and how it will benefit them in their course, field of work and professional lives beyond school.
Under Task, I clearly listed the actions and sequence of activities students need to progress through to complete the activity.
Under Criteria for success, I highlighted the rubric and also mentioned how students can use examples of excellent work discussed in the classroom to help guide and complete their work.
Overall, the TILT Framework ensured that I was effectively able to 'set the stage' and cohesively highlight the most important parts of the activity / lab on the introduction page.
